SSI Benefit Questions — Plain Answers
Common questions about how SSI payments are calculated and who qualifies.
How much SSI will I get per month in 2024?
The maximum federal SSI benefit in 2024 is $943/month for an individual and $1,415/month for a married couple. Your actual payment is reduced by your countable income. Many states also add a supplement on top of the federal amount.
How does the SSA calculate my SSI benefit?
The SSA starts with the Federal Benefit Rate, then subtracts your countable income. To find countable income: subtract the $20 general exclusion from unearned income first, then subtract the $65 earned income exclusion from wages, then divide remaining earned income in half. Your SSI = FBR minus total countable income.
What income does NOT count against SSI?
The first $20/month of most income, the first $65/month of wages, half of wages above $65, SNAP benefits, most home energy assistance, irregular income under $20/month, and educational grants used for tuition.
Can I get SSI if I work?
Yes. Working does not disqualify you. The SSA's income exclusions let you keep more of your SSI when you work. The first $65 of monthly wages is excluded, and half of remaining wages is also excluded — so you can earn some income and still receive a reduced SSI benefit.
Does Social Security (SSDI) count as income for SSI?
Yes — SSDI, retirement, and survivor benefits count as unearned income. However, the $20 general exclusion applies first, so the first $20 of your Social Security benefit each month is not counted against your SSI.
What is the SSI income limit for 2024?
There is no hard cutoff — your benefit is reduced dollar-for-dollar by countable income until it reaches $0. For an individual, SSI reaches $0 when countable income equals $943/month. Because of exclusions, someone with only wages could earn up to roughly $1,971/month before SSI hits $0.
